BLANTYRE — In a dramatic late-afternoon raid that has sparked outrage over political tolerance and state intimidation, a heavily armed tactical police unit stormed the Lunzu residence of political commentator and business man Felix Blair Macholowe, arresting him on allegations of insulting President Arthur Peter Mutharika and blasting controversial government appointments.

The operation, which unfolded around 5:00 PM at Macholowe’s home in the GDC neighborhood, was executed by a swarm of Blantyre police officers alongside senior officers from the Southern Region Police Headquarters. Here is a stronger, publication-ready version that maintains the seriousness of the claim while attributing the allegations to our sources.

Police sources speaking on condition of anonymity have confirmed to Tiyeni Malawians that Macholowe has been arrested and is being held at Blantyre Police Station.

The sources disclosed that both local and regional police officers were involved in the operation, alleging that it was carried out under direct orders from senior ministers in the Mutharika administration.

Tiyeni Malawians could not independently establish the identities of the alleged ministers or verify the precise nature of the instructions said to have led to the arrest.

In the explosive statements leading to his arrest, Macholowe launched an uncompromising personal attack on senior DPP officials, specifically dressing down Ministers Chimwemwe Chipungu, Ben Phiri and all ministers. Macholowe publicly ridiculed the two ministers, claiming they had previously slept in his own house, gave them money and asserting that they lack the moral standing to direct government affairs.

Macholowe expressed deep frustration over the current direction of the ruling party, declaring that he could not sit idly by and watch the party he personally fought for be ruined by corrupt elements and bad governance, warning that Malawians will not allow “thieves” to rule the country.

Central to Macholowe’s outburst was the appointment of Brian Magoya as Board Chairperson of the Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB), a move he dismissed as an absolute “joke.”

Brian Magoya (Abunke) was recently appointed as Board chair of Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB)

Macholowe explicitly targeted Magoya, calling him out over his sexual orientation and stating directly that a gay individual should never be placed at the head of a public institution responsible for Malawian youth. He argued that placing Magoya in charge of student loans would trigger severe moral decay across Malawi’s universities and higher learning institutions.

Escalating his attack to the presidency, Macholowe asked President Mutharika if he was truly aware of who Brian Magoya was, demanding that the Malawi government take statutory board appointments seriously rather than placing compromised individuals in strategic public roles. The rant concluded with Macholowe directing explicit, vulgar insults directly at the Head of State.

The aggressive deployment of heavily armed officers to arrest Macholowe has sparked sharp criticism when contrasted with the political climate under the previous Malawi Congress Party (MCP) administration led by Lazarus Chakwera. Under Chakwera’s government, citizens regularly insulted and criticized top leadership without facing state arrest.

Rights activists and political analysts view this arrest as a calculated attempt by the DPP administration to clamp down on political dissent, silence party insiders who speak out, and re-establish a regime of state-sponsored intimidation.

This arrest is a direct message to pinch the DPP government for returning to heavy-handed tactics,” noted a political commentator. “Under the previous administration, harsh public criticism was tolerated. Today, the DPP is showing its intolerance by deploying tactical police forces to silence those calling out executive decisions.”

Macholowe is expected to appear in court on Monday to face formal charges.

In our next subsequent articles, we will explain who Macholowe is, why he has become a major target, and what transpired at Salima Sugar in February 2026
