The courtroom was very quiet.

Not the normal quiet of people waiting for a case.

This was a heavy quiet, you could hear chairs moving, you could hear people shifting.

Even small sounds felt too loud,a pen was scratching on paper. That was the only sound that did not stop.

Magistrate Nyirenda sat at the front. He was writing everything carefully.

In front of him stood two women.

A mother and her daughter.

They were not strangers to trouble.

Everyone in court already knew their story. It had been all over social media, people had talked about it in markets radio stations had discussed it.

Most people had already made up their minds they believed she had poisoned her own baby.

Few people asked questions. They just believed what they heard. But inside the courtroom, something strange started to happen, the case did not go the way people expected.

It slowly changed.

Instead of focusing on the child, the court started focusing on the two women.

The daughter spoke the mother answered. The daughter asked harder questions the mother answered without backing down.

It became more than just a court case.It became a fight.A deep fight between a mother and a daughter.

The room became very quiet.People could not believe what they were hearing. This was no longer just about a child. It was about something bigger.

Confrontation in court. (AI)

Something which broke a long time ago

The magistrate stopped writing.

He put down his pen.

He just listened for a moment.

Then he spoke.”

I have never seen a mother and daughter fight like this in my court before.” β€œThis Is my first time seeing something like this”

The room went silent again.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because now everyone could feel it.

This case was not just about what happened to a child.

It was about a family that was already broken long before that day.

A family full of pain.

A family full of distance.

A family full of anger that was never fixed.

And things that were never said.

And the woman at the center of it all stood there quietly.

She did not say much.

But all eyes were on her.

And nobody in that courtroom knew the full truth yet…not even close…

Long before the courtroom, long before people started talking and judging. It was just an ordinary evening at least it looked ordinary.

She lived in Area 38, Lilongwe.Three months earlier, her mother had moved into her house to help take care of her 7 months old baby.

Life was normal in a simple way.

Hustle.

Home.

Baby.

Routine.

That evening, she left home at around 6:00 p.m. The baby stayed behind. Her mother was in the house a maid was also there everything looked fine nothing was wrong, nothing was strange.

At about 8:30 p.m., she came back home. She greeted her mother and asked for the baby.

Nothing seemed unusual.

No warning.

No panic.

No sickness.

She took the baby into the bedroom. The maid was there, sleeping in the same room as usual.

Her Mom slept alone in her room.

She placed the baby on the bed. Then she went to take a shower just a normal moment, something she had done many times before. But everything changed in a few minutes.

When she came out of the bathroom, something was wrong.

The baby was choking, the child looked like she was struggling to breathe. Then the baby started vomiting.

She reacted fast, she picked the baby up immediately she rushed back into the bathroom.Seconds later, the baby vomited again the situation was now serious.

Very serious.

But what happened next shocked her

Instead of helping, her mother ran outside she did not come closer, she did not check the baby, she did not try to help.

She just ran out of the house.

Then came the shouting.

Loud voices in the night.

People started coming out of their homes.

The words spread fast.

β€œHelp! She has poisoned her baby!”

β€œHelp! She has poisoned my grandchild!”

The whole neighbourhood woke up people gathered quickly.

Confusion turned into anger and in a few minutes, everything was out of control. And that night… everything changed.

The words spread through the neighbourhood.

Fast.

Too fast.

People came out of their houses, they gathered in groups. Everyone wanted to know what was happening, but no one had clear answers.

Only noise.

Only fear.

Questions turned into accusations.

Accusations turned into anger.

The crowd grew bigger.

Then louder.

Then dangerous.

Some people wanted to attack her.

Tithane naye ameneyu.

Her mother kept shouting the same thing.

That the baby had been poisoned.

That her daughter was responsible.

The words did not stop.

They kept repeating.

Over and over again.

But she was focused on the baby, her child was still vomiting. The situation was getting worse there was no time to argue no time to explain, only time to move.

She found a motorcycle.

Like a kangaroo, she held her baby tightly. On her chest.

Off to the clinic Pic:AI illustration

First, they went to a local clinic. Medications were given just for first aid.Later they left for Bwaila Hospital. The road was rough, the journey was urgent.

The baby kept vomiting.

Her chest and her boobs were soaked with vomit. But she did not stop.

At Bwaila Hospital, doctors quickly checked the baby they did not waste time.

The condition was serious.

The baby needed more treatment.

She was referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital.

The journey continued.

No peace.

No answers.

Only movement.

Only fear.

At Kamuzu Central Hospital, the situation became worse. Her mother was there too,and she kept repeating the same words.β€œShe poisoned the baby.”The words spread through the hospital.

People listened and believed.Crowds began to form some were shocked some were angry some were confused.

But many had already chosen a side.

Meanwhile, doctors were fighting to save the baby. The child was taken into intensive care. For 2 hours, they worked silently, machines replaced voices, hope fought against time.

Outside, another storm was rising.

When the baby was moved to the ward, everything changed again.

The shouting returned.

The crowd returned, the anger returned people stopped asking questions.

They started demanding answers.

The situation exploded.

She was surrounded.

The baby was taken away.

Voices rose higher.

Fear filled the air.

Then everything turned violent.

She was pushed, she was beaten, she was humiliated.

Her clothes were torn.

She was left naked.

A well wisher offered her clothes.

She was left exposed.

Police officers finally arrived they tried to control the situation people were questioned but the chaos had already happened.

The same night she brought a sick child for help.

The same night she thought she was saving a life.

She was arrested.

Arrested: Pic AI illustration.

But……

This night was not where the story began.

And it was not where it will end.

Because what really started all of this…was still far back in time…somewhere no one had fully looked yet…and something about that past is still not clear…

To understand why everything exploded in court, you have to go back many years.

Long before the arrest.

Long before that night.

Long before the child fell sick.

In 2013, her parents separated after their marriage broke down it was not easy for anyone.

Life changed for all of them.

Slowly, they went in different directions.

Her father stayed alone for years. He did not rush into another marriage.

He stayed distant but present in his own way.

Her mother moved on quickly.

Almost immmediately.

She started a new life with another man in Chileka. He worked as an airport firefighter with civil aviation.

For a while, life looked stable again then everything changed.

The man died a few years later and life became difficult once more. As time passed, struggles increased.

There were needs that could not wait.

Food.

Sugar.

Basic things.

Sometimes she would reach out to her daughter. And sometimes help would come.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Without much discussion.

By then, the daughter was living in Area 38, Lilongwe.

She had her own child

A new born And  a 7 year old.

She was trying to build her own life.At some point, she made a decision.Instead of sending help from a distance, she asked her mother to come and live with her.It felt practical it felt helpful it felt like a solution.

Her mother moved in.

The arrival: Pic AI illustration

The idea was simple. She would help with the child. And life would become easier for both of them.

But things were not that simple.

There was history between them, pain that had never healed and silence that had lasted too long.

Before moving in together again, they had not spoken properly for almost two years. Two years of distance, two years of unresolved tension.

And then suddenly, they were under one roof again.

Another important figure in this story was the grandfather.Even after the divorce, he stayed close to his daughter.

He visited often.

Sometimes he brought support.

Sometimes he just spent time with the family. He remained present in a quiet way.

But even his presence created tension at times with the grandmother.

Small things were said.

Small reactions noticed.

Nothing direct.

But not nothing either.

And slowly, the house became a place where the past was never fully gone.It just stayed quiet, waiting.

And that quietness would not last forever.

By the time everything happened, the relationship between mother and daughter was already strained.

They were living in the same house. But life between them was not the same.It was distant. It was cold.It was quiet in a way that carried tension.

The night that changed everything had already raised too many questions. But no clear answers.

Only confusion.

Only silence.

After the arrest, everything moved quickly, she was taken into custody, days passed.

Time felt slow.

Long.

Heavy.

One key detail was raised.

The police said that her body smelled of drugs. But this was later explained as coming from baby vomit, since the baby had been vomiting on the way to the hospital.

Another question also remained in the background.

On that day, she left the house around 6:00 p.m. and returned around 8:30 p.m.

Did she go to buy poison during that time?

Nobody knows what was really thought in those moments.

Some questions began to circulate.

Was there jealousy between mother and daughter?

Jealousy linked to her close bond with the man her mother once divorced?

And if so, could that have created anger deep enough to lead to punishment?

Others looked at it differently.

Was the mother of the 7-month-old simply overwhelmed?

Tired of responsibility?

Tired of raising a child again?

And in that state, could she have made a decision to end the child’s life just to regain her freedom?

There were also questions about support.

Was the father of the child not present enough?

Did pressure, frustration, and lack of support play a role?

Or was it a combination of many problems building up at once?

Another question comes

Postpartum psychosis

A severe mental illness that can happen after childbirth, where a mother may lose touch with reality and, in some cases harm the baby.

But none of these questions have answers.

Only theories.

Only speculation.

Only silence.

Today, she is out on bail.

She is at her father’s place, with her baby.

But the case is still not finished.

More witnesses are expected to appear.

The maid who was inside the house that night is yet to testify.

Neighbours will also speak in court.

Medical workers who treated the child will give their accounts.

The police investigators will also testify.

And the investigation is still ongoing.

In cases like this, the truth takes time, sometimes three to five years or more.Because the State must carefully gather evidence, and nothing can be rushed when lives and justice are at stake

And the grandmother?

Wants to the case discontinued

Questions remain open.

Too many questions.

No clear ending yet.

The night itself is still being examined from every angle.

The movements.

The timing.

The reactions.

The hospital events.

Everything is still under discussion.

And still, one question hangs over everything.

What really happened inside that house that night.

As the case continues in court

The silence from that night has not disappeared.

It has only moved.

From the house…

to the hospital…

to the courtroom…

waiting for the moment it finally breaks.

And until that moment comes…
