Blantyre City Mayor Isaac Jomo Osman has once again been captured on camera in an alleged assault, this time involving an individual at a petrol station in the city.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening around 9pm at Yanakis Speedys supermarket (also described as a petrol station). According to the victim, Hassan Osman, CCTV footage shows the mayor assaulting him in full view of the public and, remarkably, in the presence of police officers.

Hassan Osman told Tiyeni Malawians that he had simply stopped to buy water and parked his vehicle at the designated car park. The mayor then approached him, aggressively shouting and swearing in Chichewa, insisting he leave because he believed Hassan was jumping the fuel queue and would not allow him to enter the shop. The situation quickly turned physical.

“I was punched in the face  with both his hands and forced over my car,” Hassan Osman recounted. He emphasised the irony of the confrontation: his vehicle already had a full tank

Hassan Osman has since pressed charges of assault against the mayor.

Assaulted: Osman.

This is the second time Mayor Osman has been filmed assaulting a member of the public. In early May 2026, he was captured on video streamed live on his own Facebook page physically and verbally assaulting a woman accused of buying stolen goods during an anti-crime operation. That earlier incident drew strong condemnation from the Malawi Human Rights Commission, other rights groups, and the public. Osman later apologised, describing his actions as falling short of the standards expected of a public official.

The Malawi Police Service has not yet issued a public comment on the latest alleged assault.

As mayor of Malawi’s commercial capital and a public servant, Osman’s repeated involvement in such incidents raises serious questions about leadership, the rule of law, and the example set by those in positions of authority.

Assault is a criminal offence, and no one regardless of office is above the law.
