NKHATA BAY, Malawi, July 28- Four Dutch nationals and three crew members missing after a speedboat failed to complete a crossing of Lake Malawi have been found alive and are receiving medical care, authorities said. The Tanzanian-registered vessel, Makutuwima Cruise, left Mbamba Bay in Tanzania on Sunday morning bound for Nkhata Bay on the Malawian side of the lake, a distance of more than 60 km (37 miles). When the boat did not arrive as expected, Malawi’s Ministry of Transport reported it missing around 5 p.m. local time, triggering a search-and-rescue operation involving authorities from both countries with support from the Dutch embassy. The group was located on Monday in the North Mbamba Bay area on the Tanzanian shore and taken to Mbamba Bay for further medical assessment after receiving first aid, according to Malawi’s Ministry of Transport and Public Works. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that all seven people were safely back on land and receiving medical assistance. “Thanks to the search operation by the local authorities in Tanzania and Malawi, in cooperation with the embassy colleagues, this worrying situation has fortunately come to an end, and the occupants are safely back on land,” the Dutch ministry said in a statement. Details of what caused the boat to lose contact or fail to complete the journey have not been released. The vessel was powered by two 90-horsepower Yamaha outboard engines. Lake Malawi, one of Africa’s Great Lakes and shared by Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique, is a major transport and fishing route but is known for sudden weather changes and limited rescue infrastructure in some areas. The Dutch ministry did not release further information on the condition of the four nationals, citing privacy.
