Lilongwe, Malawi — An Ethiopian mother has appealed for urgent assistance after alleging that her son was kidnapped at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi and that those responsible are demanding money for his release.

The mother, identified as Beta, who is based in Ethiopia, said her son, Abirham Tadewos, was taken on 26 June 2026 at Dzaleka Refugee Camp.

In a written appeal dated 1 July 2026, Beta alleged that her son was kidnapped by an Ethiopian national identified as Nigussie Siyum, who she claims is demanding a ransom of $5,000 for his release.

She said she has no means of raising the money and is appealing for help to secure her son’s safe return.

Beta said that, as of today 26 July 2026, Abirham has not returned home, leaving the family in Ethiopia desperate for information about his whereabouts and safety.

Authorities in Malawi, including police and officials responsible for refugee affairs, could not immediately be reached for comment.
