Lumbadzi Cash Heist: Asian Businessman Robbed of K214 Million as Police Hold Repeat Suspects

LILONGWE – Police in Lumbadzi are holding two suspects linked to a daring daylight cash robbery in which an Asian businessman was robbed of K214 million intended for a foreign currency exchange deal.

The incident, which has raised fresh questions about the handling of repeat offenders and possible internal protection within the Malawi Police Service, occurred earlier this week when the victim travelled from Mzuzu to Lilongwe.

According to details gathered by Tiyeni Malawians, the businessman was lured from Mzuzu by individuals claiming to have US dollars for exchange. Upon arrival in Lilongwe, he borrowed a vehicle from a Malawian friend and proceeded to a bank where he withdrew K400 million. He reportedly placed K214 million in a bag on the front seat and the remaining K186 million in the back of the vehicle.

The transaction was arranged to take place in the Lumbadzi area. Upon meeting the suspects, the victim showed them the cash, only to be ambushed and robbed of the K214 million bag. After making off with the money, the assailants deflated the vehicle’s tyres and smashed one of its windows before fleeing the scene, effectively disabling the victim’s means of immediate pursuit or escape. The damaged vehicle is now stationed at Lumbadzi Police Station.

Police swiftly launched investigations and apprehended two individuals known by the nicknames Afila and Breda. The pair, who stay together in Area 49, Lilongwe, were allegedly found drinking at a liquor shop near Best Oil in the same area. During subsequent searches at their homes, officers recovered what appeared to be bank money seals and rubber bands consistent with those used to bundle large cash amounts. A Mazda Demio vehicle, believed to have been used in the operation and fitted with a motorbike number plate to conceal its identity, was also seized.

Despite these recoveries, the stolen K214 million has not been found in the suspects’ possession. The two were transferred to Lumbadzi Police Station, where they have been held for three days without being brought before a court, raising concerns over procedural compliance

Tiyeni Malawians understands that the suspects are well-known to police and have a history of similar activities. Reliable sources, speaking on strict condition of anonymity, claim the same individuals were involved in a comparable cash robbery three months ago but were released without facing full prosecution

“There are strong indications that senior police officers may be acting as conduits or providing protection in these cases,” one source alleged. The source further claimed the suspects “akagwira mbendela ku Area 30” – a local expression suggesting they secured their release through influence or inducements at police headquarters.

The allegations, if substantiated, point to potential systemic weaknesses in the fight against organised cash-related crimes, particularly those targeting businesspeople involved in large cash transactions.

Malawi has in recent years seen a surge in sophisticated robberies involving large sums of money, often linked to currency trading scams or staged deals. Business communities, including foreign investors and traders, have expressed growing unease over personal safety and the effectiveness of law enforcement in recovering stolen funds and securing convictions.

When contacted, police authorities had not issued an official statement on the matter by press time. Tiyeni Malawians will continue to follow developments, including any court appearances and the progress of the investigation into both the robbery and the claims of internal complicity.

The Asian community in Malawi, which contributes significantly to commerce and trade, has previously raised concerns about targeted crimes. This latest incident is expected to intensify calls for enhanced security measures and transparent handling of such high-profile cases.

The victim is said to be cooperating with investigators, though the loss of such a substantial amount is likely to have severe repercussions for his business operations.
