Paramount Chief Mbelwa of Malawi was among those briefly affected when access to Ephendukeni Palace in Chipata was momentarily blocked during the arrival of the remains of the late Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV. The brief disruption created momentary tension at the palace entrance, but calm was later restored through the intervention of senior traditional leaders on the ground and event organizers, allowing the proceedings to continue without further interruption The Ngoni Royal Establishment later condemned the conduct, with Chief Madzimawe describing the actions as disrespectful and inconsistent with the traditional understanding of chimbuya relations between the Ngoni and Bemba peoples chimbuya is a traditional form of symbolic cousinship between certain communities, including the Ngoni and Bemba, based on historical ties that recognize them as extended relatives. Despite the incident, order was restored swiftly and Mbelwa was allowed to proceed with the delegation into the palace to continue participating in the funeral proceedings. Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV died in Zambia a few days ago after a long reign spanning over 44 years. He was 75 years old at the time of his death. He is expected to be laid to rest on Tuesday, with final funeral proceedings taking place at Ephendukeni Palace ahead of burial. Mpezeni to be buried on 9 June 2026 after 44-year reign.
