Malawi Police Officer Remanded Over Alleged Link to Suspected Cash Offence

 A Malawi police officer is currently on remand at Chichiri Prison in connection with allegations surrounding millions of kwacha entrusted to him by a relative.

Sub-Inspector Brino Kamtepa, who is stationed at C Company of the Malawi Police Service, was arrested by Fiscal Police officers from Blantyre after investigators linked him to funds that had been kept at his residence in Lilongwe.

According to the case details, Kamtepa told investigators that his brother-in-law had brought the money to his home and asked him to keep it temporarily. The amount involved was in millions of Malawi kwacha.

The brother-in-law, who had been working in Blantyre for an Indian businessman, later instructed Kamtepa to purchase a vehicle. Kamtepa bought a Mercedes-Benz, which was registered in his name, and he was using the vehicle while reporting for duty. 

Investigators traced Kamtepa after arresting a friend of his brother-in-law. During questioning, the friend disclosed that his associate had kept part of the money with Kamtepa, leading investigators to question the police officer over his involvement.

Kamtepa was arrested after his brother-in-law could not be located by investigators. The officer was initially taken to police in Lilongwe, where he gave his account of events, before being transferred to Blantyre for further questioning by Fiscal Police.

The brother-in-law remains missing, while Kamtepa and other individuals connected to the matter are on remand at Chichiri Prison in Blantyre.

Kamtepa has not yet appeared in court, and the specific charges he is facing have not been publicly confirmed.

The Malawi Police Service and Fiscal Police could not immediately be reached for comment on the matter.
